Story of Installing Conexant modem chipset in Ubuntu

After struggling with the GPRS modem which Sharjeel gave me, finally I decided that I have no choice but to use my poor ISP. SCO is the only company which can provide internet in Muzaffarabad as it is the only one allowed to do so. SCO is controlled by Army!!!!!
Well, when I decided to use dial up, soon I came to know that I have never installed drivers for my modem in Ubuntu, of course I never bothered before. But now I was without internet, so how could I run my synaptic??? And 2ndly, I don't want to install non-proprietor's drivers, because they are not as good as propertier: this is my personal preference.
Well, so the search began. I rebooted into Windows where I had my modem installed. So, soon I came to know that the chipset of my modem is made by Conexant.
So I simply googled and in secs I was on www.conexant.com and after a little searching, I was amazed to found that they had a dedicated Linux development team and they had a separate URL which has Linux drivers, wow. I was soon sent to www.linuxant.com . It was quite healthy to browser the site, looked good. They even had detailed support for each Linux distributions. But wait wait wait, what they are charging for Linux driver. What the yak. How can they charge for Linux driver only while they don't charge for Windows driver and how can they charge because driver is supposed to come to come with hardware. ok ok , I had this modem pre-installed in my laptop. hmm, Acer, errrrrrrr, you guys cheated on me. Acer sold me the laptop without telling me this. Acer support is no doubt one of the crappy support which laptop vendors have. Only Acer Europe Support's website opens and they only offer Windows drivers as no one can use any other OS. and now they charge.
Well, I downloaded the free version of driver which limits my speed to 14.4 kbps and also another package which was must for Ubuntu 8.04 only. But still its Ok, because I know my crappy SCO can never give me more than 3 kbps.
